Whoa.

16Jul08

Check this out. I need more time to process it (and read up on most of them)…but whoa. And there’s our man Aitzaz Ahsan at #5! (Obligatory disclaimer: I don’t trust Aitzaz Ahsan for a minute.)

Irshad Manji speaks again - Rushdie’s knighthood

23Jun07

Here she is again, this time outraged at the protests against Rushdie’s knighthood. First of all, let me say these protests are ridiculous. The protesters really need to take the chip off their shoulders and get on with their lives. We all learned in primary school that when something bothers you the best thing you can [...]

Love, Grace, Islam

18Jan07

I just got back from the LSE ISOC’s Eid Dinner 2007. The event was on a boat, which was pretty cool, but other than the first half of the trip, we spent most of the night indoors since a) it was freezing and b) we had a guest speaker, Ms. Sarah Joseph. I normally hate speeches [...]

Religion and Science

12Jan07

Has anyone else noticed that atheists have suddenly become a lot more vocal than ever before? It’s quite a departure from the quiet indifference that characterised them in the past — indeed, this new breed of atheists displays a decidedly religious zeal in their anti-theism. The questions they raise are interesting to me in questioning [...]

Visual Dhikr

04Jul06

Wow. These guys are amazing. I love most of their stuff, and the best part is it’s very reasonably priced: 50-150 pounds for a canvas! The closest thing I’ve seen to this is Amin Gulgee’s work, and that’s obviously in a different price spectrum. I wish I could just put up some of their images here, [...]

Xenophobia and Hypocrisy are Universal

13Mar06

A conservative Jewish politician has urged a former Miss Israel/Universe not to marry her non-Jewish boyfriend. I noticed this because the boyfriend happens to be Sarunas Jasikevicius, a rookie in the NBA this season. Mr. Marzel’s urging is interesting in itself, but I found the responses people have left to the article far more interesting. Be [...]

Pope John Paul II on the path to sainthood

04Nov05

This is just so ridiculous: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/4543501.stm Not just the beatification/canonisation processes, which require a miracle to have been ‘ascribed’, but simply the fact that they’re looking for a miracle so that they can get the process rolling. It’s completely backwards, and makes you wonder what the true value/point of sainthood is.
