The Woolmer case gets weirder and weirder

08May07

There’s something seriously fishy going on. First of all, although we’ve been told categorically that Woolmer was murdered, police have been vacillating over how the crime was perpetrated, with everything from diabetes drugs to strangling to snake venom to weedkillers to strangling-with-a-towel suggested. This is despite an autopsy and several pathology reports. The police have also been reviewing the security video and have vaguely stated they are contacting persons ID’d from the tapes.

While all this has been going on (at a snail’s pace), Pakistan dispatched two respected detectives (the same ones who investigated Daniel Pearl’s murder) to assist the Jamaican police with the investigation. And a couple of days ago, they submitted a report to the Interior Ministry saying that, based on the evidence, they weren’t even sure that Woolmer was murdered. Curiously, Cricinfo published a story reporting this latest development and immediately yanked it; I only noticed because I subscribe to their RSS feed and when I clicked to look at the article, it was gone. (Here’s the URL.) That’s quite strange, given that they were waiting with bated breath for it. Indeed, if you do a quick Google search, you’ll notice that although an article reporting on it was syndicated by the Associated Press, there are very few websites that are actually running it (the one’s I’ve found are here and here). You would expect to find it on all sorts of little news sites all over the web, as you do with other cricket articles that the AP syndicates. Nope, that’s not the case here. Not even our own Dawn found it worth printing.

Suspiciously, the Jamaican police are also mum on the Pakistani report, giving conspiracy theorists like myself more fodder.

Oh well, at least I’m not the only one who finds the circus that is the Woolmer murder investigation ridiculous. Yes, irony is delicious.

Update: Hey, presto! Whaddya know, Cricinfo put this up moments after I posted this. I’m going to assume they subscribe to my RSS feed ;)

2nd Update: And now the police are ‘insisting’ that Woolmer was indeed murdered. Apparently, the Pakistani detective didn’t actually say anything to the media, and this has all been made up. Weirder and weirder.
