I gotta say, I’m pretty pissed off with IE 5/6 now. I didn’t bother looking at the new theme with it and it turns out now that it looks pretty crappy. Well known problems, such as the transparent PNG issue and CSS incompatibilities make this such a massive headache. On this blog, for example, the comment box and associated form elements aren’t positioned as they should be, so the comment box hides the ’submit’ button. And on the Nairang blog CSS incompatibilities mean that the category links (‘Home’, ‘About’, etc.) don’t get a top border, even with explicit use of
I’m not generally in favour of automatic updates, but I have to say the automatic upgrade to IE7 that’s coming soon (after November 1, no specific date provided yet) is a very good thing. The sooner the better.
Warning for those who haven’t tried out the IE 7 betas, although the application itself is quite a bit prettier than IE6 and, in fact, saves more screen space out of the box than even Opera with all the optional toolbars switched off, the rendering engine makes things look…plastic-ky. Hard to describe, but you’ll notice it everywhere — in IE, in Outlook (which uses mshtml.dll to render, for example, Outlook Today), and in the Windows File Explorer. Joy.
Note: Big ups to John Garner at UbiKann for providing transparent GIF versions of the standard K2 PNGs.
