My hero, George Galloway

28Sep06

This doesn’t even have to do with the fact that he’s supporting the Palestinians, I just love the man’s willingness to speak his mind.

Of course, this isn’t the first time for Galloway — he was similarly outspoken when he appeared for a US Senate hearing on the oil-for-food scandal.

He’s a bit of a weird person to figure out, given that he appeared on Big Brother last year for God knows what reason. Still, from what I’ve seen of him (he addressed the Brick Lane mosque one Friday too…), he’s a politician with real views on things, and isn’t easily swayed by popular opinion.

I’m sure there’s a lot we don’t know about him. But that URL you posted doesn’t convince me he’s twisting facts around:

    1) The first set of quotes is from the Americans and the ESPAC blaming each other for propaganda. All Galloway says is that there is, in fact, a lot of propaganda, not which side is responsible.

    2) The second set of quotes establishes that what’s happening in Darfur is genocide. Galloway is quoted as saying it’s not, but says there is a great deal of suffering there. I’d like to see the context in which that statement was made — perhaps Galloway simply feels the issue can be highlighted under a term other than genocide (’civil war’ is just as good). I don’t deny Galloway is openly pro-Muslim in many places, but I don’t think that’s automatically wrong.

The rest of the quotes I saw (I didn’t go all the way down the page — I assume any seriously egregious quotes would have headlined the page) were mostly poking fun at minor factual consistencies, such as the true size of Sudan. Well, yippee, you’ve proved the guy’s an ass.

I think he really does speak his mind and does that well. I saw an interview of him on Sky news, they really had a hard time trying to get him to give the answers they wanted. The guy is hero is some parts of the world. Darfur: According to the Sudanese people, the Darfur area is very rich in natural resources. Hence all the hoopla surrounding it. Where where the UN peace keepers when the problems in Rwanda happpened. I am more inclined towards the views found in the book, the dogs of war.
