This is bizarre — I honestly did not know this till just a minute ago. The LSE ‘about’ page names Beatrice and Sidney Webb as its founders, but neglects to mention that they were both prominent and early members of the Fabian Society. They, along with (my man) George Bernard Shaw and others, are credited with turning the Society into the ‘pre-eminent political-intellectual society’ in England.
I found this out while looking up the curriculum for the external Diploma in Economics for AB, here.
So, what’s the point? Well, I’m a big fan of the ideas behind the Society, and founder/owner of the Orkut community that bears its name. Weird coincidence.
(Le Paris post remains unfinished. I finished it a few days ago at work, and it got wiped out. Grr.)
