I played better than last week this Tuesday, but once again did not encourage any physical contact at all, instead hoisting up lots of silly shots. Yes, my shooting has improved considerably, but I’m not that good. Oopar sai, I’ve gotten slightly weaker since I haven’t been hitting the gym the last month and a half, so I didn’t even have the strength to warrant attempting some of those shots. (I did have a very nice runner to start the first game, a beautiful jumper off a curl and a couple of long jumpers…)
Anyway, this is to remind myself what I need to be doing with respect to driving: Approach: When one is more than 3 feet away from the defender, start positioning body between ball and defender. Try to get him to set his feet or just stop for a moment. Check the rest of the squad for positions and intentions. Step in: Now make the move, leading with the less dominant side’s foot (eg, right), taking a small step. Take off: Now the big step, to create distance from the defender.
Remember to square shoulders to the basket.
